Whakatipuranga - behind the name

Whakatipuranga means generation. Te Pōu o ngā Whakatipuranga is designed to represent and symbolise the growth of this Year 6 cohort or generation over their time at Mahora School.

Pakati

Wrapped around the bottom of Te Pōu o ngā Whakatipuranga is the Pakati pattern. This pattern represents courage and strength. It is located at the bottom of the Pou as it symbolises a strong base to keep our Pou grounded and standing upright. As Year 6 leaders at Mahora School, you must be strong, based and show courage. It also symbolises the need to show strength and courage as Year 6’s move on to new beginnings and challenges.

Koru

There are 5 heart shaped koru that go up the front of the Pou. The koru represent each of the 5 values of Mahora School: Mauri, Whanaungatanga, Ngākaupai, Kaitiakitanga and Manaakitanga. Each koru pattern is coloured in the colour that represents one of these values. These values are what our Year 6’s strive to show daily as leaders of our school. They underpin everything that we do. These 5 values aren’t just important for the time that you are at Mahora School, but are important as we mature and navigate our way through life in the future.

Pipiwharauroa - 5 Stages

Within the 5 koru hearts are 5 different stages of the Pipiwharauroa. The Pipiwharauroa is our school bird and holds special meaning for all tamariki, kaiako and whānau at Mahora School. The 5 different silhouettes of the Pipiwharauroa on this Pou represent our tamariki and their journey as Mahora ākonga. The Pipiwharauroa silhouettes develop as you move up the Pou. The final stage shows the Pipiwharauroa spreading its wings and soaring away. This symbolises our Year 6’s spreading their wings and leaving Mahora School for new challenges. This bird has more detailed koru pattern (feathers) within its body, which links to our school whakatauki: ma te huruhuru ka rere te manu - adorn the bird with feathers so it can fly.

Ahu Ahu Mataroa

Located at the back of the Pou is the Ahu Ahu Mataroa pattern. This pattern runs up the spine of the Pou from Pakati to the very top. Ahu Ahu Mataroa is a pattern that represents talent, achievement and new challenges. Every single one of our tamariki has talent and skill that is unique to themselves. The pattern also symbolises the success that this group of Year 6 have achieved at Mahora School.

Names

Within Ahu Ahu Mataroa are the signed Year 6 names that run in the middle of the pattern. The names run up the spine Te Pōu o ngā Whakatipuranga, acting as steps of a ladder. This closely links with Piki Haere - Keep on Climbing.  This part of the Pou is special for our tamariki as it means they are represented and forever remembered as part of the Mahora School whānau.

Black Band (Black Cap)

The black band at the top of Te Pōu o ngā Whakatipuranga follows a common theme of past Pou designs. It represents a Black Cap - a leader of Mahora School.
